Young Progressive Defeats Establishment in Jersey City Mayoral Race, Echoing Mamdani

A month following the defeat of former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City’s mayoral race by a democratic socialistZohran Mamdani, another former governor who had fallen from grace attempted to regain political favor by running for mayor, but was also defeated by a younger, progressive candidate.

Former New JerseyGovernor Jim McGreevey, who was campaigning for the position of mayor in Jersey City, the state’s second-largest city, did not succeed in the runoff election held on Tuesday.

The 68-year-old McGreevey lost to 41-year-old Councilman James Solomon, as reported by the Associated Press.

Both candidates, who are Democrats, emerged as the leading vote-getters among seven participants in last month’s nonpartisan general election in the city known for its liberal leanings. However, because no candidate secured a majority, McGreevey and Solomon competed against each other in the runoff election.

The newly elected mayor was initially chosen for the council in 2017 following roles as a part-time professor in Jersey City. He had earlier held positions in the offices of long-serving Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and former Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who is now a U.S. senator.

MCGREEVEY, SOLOMAN, MOVE TO RUNOFF VOTE

A former state legislator, McGreevey became governor in 2001. However, he stepped down in 2004 and revealed he was gay following claims that he engaged in an extramarital relationship with a male employee who he identified as New Jersey’s homeland security advisor. The advisor refuted the allegations, stating there was no affair and instead accused the governor of subjecting him to sexual harassment.

McGreevey, highlighting his role as executive director of a nonprofit that offers assistance to individuals reentering society after prison, addiction recovery, or military service, now refers to himself as a “proponent of new beginnings.”

McGreevey’s failed effort to regain political relevance comes nextCuomo’s failed bid.

Cuomo, who stepped down as governor in 2021 due to several controversies, sought the position of New York City mayor this year. However, he was defeated in June’s Democratic primary by Mamdani.
