15-Year-Old Arrested in Fatal Stabbing Attempt in Northeast Japan

TOKYO — A 15-year-old youth from Kitakami, a city in Iwate Prefecture, was taken into custody on December 2, facing accusations of attempted murder following an incident where he reportedly stabbed a man with a knife on the street.

The injured individual, who sustained significant harm, reportedly mentioned during transport to a hospital that he was unfamiliar with the middle school student. The Iwate Prefectural Police are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the event.

A student is reportedly charged with stabbing a 36-year-old male office worker from Kamaishi, a city in the prefecture, multiple times in the back with a knife around 2:30 a.m. on December 2 on a street in Kitakami, allegedly attempting to kill him.

On the morning of December 2, the student’s family contacted the Kitakami Police Station of the prefectural police, stating that their son “appears to have committed an offense.”

As per the police station, the student confessed to stabbing the man but mentioned he didn’t wish to discuss the motive. It is thought that only the student and the man were at the location when the stabbing occurred. Authorities have taken the weapon.
